Debunking 5 Mold Myths

Mold myths, true or false?

Without proper treatment, mold issues can affect your health and make your storage spaces un-usable, ruining books and clothes and spreading its tell-tale musty odor throughout your home.

To cut through much of the ‘common-sense’ discourse around mold, we have compiled 5 of the biggest
mold facts and myths.

Myth #1: You can keep your house completely mold-free

Mold is everywhere. In nature, it plays an important function in breaking down dead leaves and trees. It’s also one of the primary agents of decay and it can be found almost anywhere.

In the small amounts usually found in the air, however, mold isn’t an issue — we’ve adapted our bodies to be able to handle small amounts of the stuff, and once there isn’t a problematic or visible infestation it shouldn’t cause any issues in your home.

However, the idea that you can completely eradicate it is a non-starter though. Microscopic spores will always be present in some form or another. This means that the most important task for the home-owner is to ensure that any conditions in your home won’t allow the spores to thrive and create a problem.

Myth #2: Mold is always visible

You should never assume that if you don’t see any mold, then there isn’t any in your home. Aside from the spores, there are other ways in which a mold problem can worsen.

By their nature, molds and fungus like to have dark, damp spaces to reproduce. Common spots where you’ll find them thriving include large pieces of furniture, beneath floorboards, between walls and in disused areas of a house. These are all spaces that we typically don’t check day-to-day — however, just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Myth #3: Once the mold is removed, it won’t come back

This is one of the biggest black mold myths around. Despite what specialized mold paints and treatments might list on their packaging, mold will reproduce so long as basic conditions exist for it to do so. While a topical wall treatment might take care of the issue temporarily, there is no guarantee that you won’t find yourself in the same position again in a few months’ time.

Unless the source of the moisture or damp is dealt with sufficiently, it’s simply a waiting game for when mold spores can begin to reproduce again.

Myth #4: You shouldn’t worry about a small spot of mold

As we’ve mentioned already, mold likes hidden spaces. If you find a spot of mold somewhere visible in your house, there can be no telling how much worse the problem will be in areas that you can’t easily see.

In fact, the presence of a small spot of mold in a highly visible place likely means that there is a more extensive issue that’s cropped up somewhere out of sight.

Myth #5: You can should take care of mold infestations yourself

This is probably one of the most
mold disease myths out there. While you may be able to take the initial steps of applying over-the-counter treatments to remove any visible signs of mold, fully eradicating it from your home should always be handled by qualified professionals.

Without an experienced eye, important details and tell-tale signs of deeper structural issues or causes of your infestation may go un-noticed, prolonging your mold problem. Furthermore, without the proper training and safety equipment, too much exposure to mold can make you ill and lead to respiratory distress.
