How to prevent mold:

Mold growth is a common problem for many homeowners. Depending on where you live and what the climate is like in your location, you may be more vulnerable to household mold than others.  In any case, it’s important for a homeowner like you to learn how to clean mold so you can protect your health and belongings.

Using a proprietary mold cleaner to deal with an infestation is possible, but as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. In this article, we’ll give you actionable steps you can take to prevent
mold growth in your home.

The following general tips should help you avoid ever having to deal with residential mold:

  • Use dehumidifiers and fans, and regularly open windows to help reduce the build-up of moisture in your home.
  • Keep a lookout for and fix plumbing leaks as soon as possible.
  • Prevent rainwater from seeping into your home.
  • Keep the fabrics in your home dry and clean them routinely.
  • Undertake mold removal immediately once you see any signs of it

Apart from these general mold prevention tips, there are specific measures you can take to prevent mold from growing in your appliances.

Cleaning and Mold Prevention Tips for Your Washing Machine

Because of its constant exposure to moisture, your washing machine is vulnerable to mold infestations. To prevent an actual infestation from happening, observe the following tips:

  • Use high-efficiency laundry detergent in the specified amounts and remove wet clothes from the chamber immediately after a wash;
  • Avoid liquid fabric softeners and flush out any residue after every wash;
  • Leave the machine door open after each wash to allow leftover moisture inside the machine to evaporate thoroughly;
  • Wipe the glass door and rubberized gasket with a mildew cleaner or disinfectant on  a regular basis; and
  • Clean the wash powder dispenser and associated attachments at least every other week

To spray-clean and disinfect your washing machine, mix one part bleach with four parts water or equal amounts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Use this solution to spray-clean the unit and wipe away any residue from the rubber seal.

Cleaning and Mold Prevention Tips for Your Refrigerator

One of the most terrible places to get a mold infestation in is your refrigerator. To avoid such massive detriment to your health, follow these mold prevention tips:

  • Keep the interior of your refrigerator as dry as possible;
  • Keep an eye on the produce section where you store fruits and vegetables which may have more moisture after these items have been washed;
  • Ensure that all goods stored in the fridge have completely dried after washing;
  • Regularly clean the refrigerator with warm water but make sure the trays, compartments, and shelves are dry before closing the doors.

Using a spray solution containing hydrogen peroxide or vinegar is a great chemical-free way to keep your refrigerator clean and mold-free. Using a toothbrush or small scrubbing brush to clean out the hard-to-access door creases can also help facilitate
mold removal.

Cleaning and prevention tips for your HVAC system

To prevent mold growing in HVAC systems, it’s important to:

  • Regularly check and maintain the drain pans;
  • Check the air intakes and keep the ducts dry;
  • Replace air filters on a regular basis; and
  • Apply an HVAC mold inhibitor

When cleaning HVAC systems, combine 1 part Borax with 16 parts water or 1 part bleach with 16 parts water for use on non-porous surfaces and spray accordingly.
